MUMBAI: The stage is set for the Oscars of Arab jewellery world with World Gold Council in association with Hammer Group selecting the five winners of AuDITIONS Arabia, the premier Pan-Arab gold jewellery design contest.
The names of these winners will be announced in a grand finale awards ceremony to be held in mid-March 2009.
Industry professionals and representatives from Hammer Group and World Gold Council conducted the first judging session to choose the top 30 designs from 100 short-listed entries which were then manufactured into actual gold jewellery pieces by the Hammer Group.
The final judging session was held on November 26, 2008, where these 30 designs were modeled for an elite panel of judges comprised of some of the most accomplished and well known jewellery and fashion professionals, industry experts and representatives from the World Gold Council, Hammer Group and AngloGold Ashanti. The final 5 winners were selected from the top 30 finalists by the judging panel.
The attempt is to inspire, kindle and tap the rich and latent design talent of the region and showcase it on an international platform.
The theme of the contest was ‘Ethno-Contemporary’ with contestants required to draw inspiration from the ancient traditions, rich cultural fabric, including art, architecture and the heritage of the Arab region over the centuries and blend it with the luxury of gold to develop designs that recall and reflect those traditions in a the present, modern context.
The selection of these five winners was based on a set criterion that chiefly took into account such aspects like quality of the design, which included its technical aspect, its aesthetic and visual appeal, its fashionable allure, the degree of creativity involved and finally how the design translated into an actual piece of jewellery.
AuDITIONS Arabia is part of AuDITIONS Global platform which is a gold jewellery design competition launched across the globe in South Africa, Brazil, India and China in partnership with AngloGold Ashanti one of the world’s largest producers of gold with 20 operations in 10 countries on 4 continents.
AuDITIONS Arabia was launched in January 2008 with the last call for entries set for March 2008. However, following its huge response its deadline was extended until end of April 2008 when almost 10,000 entries submitted by 1,000 participants from across the Arab world were received. It included both Arab and non-Arab designers residing in the Middle East, amateurs and professional alike, all of whom received equal opportunity irrespective of their technical capabilities. The top 100 designs selected in this first judging session were from a diverse mix of nationalities such as Egyptian, Saudi, Emirati, Indian, Syrian, Jordanian, Moroccan, Sri Lankan, Algerian, Yemeni, Libyan, Bahraini, Iraqi, Lebanese, Kuwaiti, Palestinian, Filipino and Tunisian.
