India-China deal to promote jewellery sector

GOA: Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) of India and Shanghai Diamond Exchange (SDE) have signed a memorandum of understanding for promoting gold and diamond jewellery industry.

The agreement was signed during the second edition of IIJS Signature, held from February 20-23, 2009, at Goa.

The show witnessed domestic as well international as visitors from countries like CIS, Turkey, the UAE, Syria, China and Poland.

Talking about the show, one of the participant said, "Given the current economic scenario, we were not expecting too much out of this show. But overall, we are happy with the way it went and the way it was organized. I'll be back next year also, there's no doubt about it".

The main objectives of the participants were to forge new relationships, facilitate broader business dialogues and look at areas of trade cooperations and investments.

In all, there were around 72 exhibitors and the show was hosted across 1500 square meters. According to a reliable source at the show, there were a total of approximately 200 visitors a day, from India and abroad and about ten delegations from China, Syria, Uzbekistan, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Poland,UAE, Russia, Iran and Ukraine.

The show facilitated a broader business dialogue through buyer-seller interactions and debates. There were various seminars and group meetings like the "Trend Jewelry Forecasting 2010" by TJF Group, Italy. Martin Rapaport took the participants through the New Realities of the Diamond Industry and there was also a panel discussion on "Transformation Journey for Indian Jewelry Retail - Taking Stock" which was moderated by Neelesh Hundekari, AT Kearney.
